I’ll be honest: when I first heard about Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) way back in 2016 —aka tapping—I was skeptical. Tapping on your face and body to release stress? Sounded a little too woo for my liking. But back in 2016, when my insomnia was kicking my ass and nothing else was working, I decided to give it a shot. And holy wow, did it work.
Fast forward a few years—2018 to be exact—and I was deep in the world of cognitive coaching. I’d trained as a coach and was helping my clients shift their mindset, challenge their limiting beliefs, and rewire their thinking. And don’t get me wrong—this stuff is powerful. But I started to notice something…
Cognitive coaching could only take people so far. We’d unpick their thought patterns, set goals, build strategies—and yet, some clients would still feel stuck. Like they knew what they needed to do, but there was some invisible force holding them back.
And that’s when I realized: mindset work alone isn’t enough.
Because trauma, stress, and emotional blocks don’t just live in the mind—they live in the body.
Enter: EFT—The Game Changer
EFT, or tapping, is a mind-body technique that combines acupressure (from traditional Chinese medicine) with modern psychology. Essentially, it involves gently tapping on specific meridian points (the same ones used in acupuncture) while focusing on an emotional challenge or limiting belief. The result? You calm your nervous system, rewire emotional responses, and clear stuck energy—all without having to rehash years of childhood drama on a therapist’s couch.
And when I got officially qualified in EFT last year, it took my coaching to an entirely new level.
Now, I use tapping on almost every coaching call (with permission, of course), and the results have been insane. Clients shift deep-rooted patterns in minutes, not months. Anxiety that’s been lingering for years? Poof. That nagging fear of being seen or imposter syndrome? Gone. Procrastination? Let’s just say my clients are ticking off their to-do lists faster than ever.
But Does EFT Actually Work? (AKA, Show Me the Science)
Oh, you want facts? I got you.
- EFT has been clinically proven to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) by up to 43% in just one session. (That’s not just relaxing—it’s life-changing levels of calm.)
- Research has shown that tapping can significantly reduce anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms. In fact, studies found it to be just as effective as CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)—but with faster results.
- A 2019 study found that EFT improves emotional regulation, reduces food cravings, and even helps with pain relief. (Yep, you can literally tap your way to less stress AND fewer cravings for that entire tray of cookies.)
Why EFT is the Missing Piece in Coaching & Personal Growth
Traditional coaching focuses on thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors—which is essential. But if you don’t address the somatic (body-based) side of things, you’re only doing half the work.
Think about it:
- You can think you’re confident, but if your body still holds onto past embarrassment or rejection, your nervous system isn’t convinced.
- You can know that fear of failure is irrational, but if your body goes into fight-or-flight every time you try something new, you’ll keep sabotaging yourself.
- You can have the best morning routine, mindset practices, and vision board in the world—but if your body is still stuck in old stress patterns, progress will be sloooow.
EFT bridges that gap. It helps you clear the emotional and energetic resistance stored in your system, so when you set a goal, you’re not just thinking about it—you’re fully aligned with it.
How I Use EFT in My Coaching
These days, tapping is a non-negotiable part of my coaching practice. Clients come to me with blocks, fears, limiting beliefs, or that general “WTF is wrong with me” feeling—and we tap through it.
What happens?
- Confidence skyrockets. They go from “I don’t think I can do this” to actually believing they can.
- Old emotional baggage disappears. (Seriously. Lifelong fears and insecurities? Released in minutes.)
- Their nervous system stops freaking out. Meaning they can show up, take action, and get results without the burnout and self-sabotage.
